A panellist proposed effectuation for autistic founders in place of traditional business planning

The story

One panellist’s case for a different way of building a business started from how autistic people think. At the 2024 Autistic Pride Day Symposium in Melbourne, when Kyriakos Gold, who hosted the session, asked what an inclusive environment for autistic entrepreneurs would really look like, the panellist said their own interest was in autistic cognition and in what an autistic business development process would look like. The panellist listed the features they had in mind: monotropic interest, starting from interest areas, bottom up thinking, associative thinking and systemising. All of that, the panellist said, was very different from a traditional business planning approach.

The first item on that list has a specific source in autism research. In a 2005 paper in the journal Autism, Dinah Murray, Mike Lesser and Wendy Lawson set out the monotropism hypothesis. They distinguished between having a few interests highly aroused, which they called the monotropic tendency, and having many interests less highly aroused, and they proposed that the concentrated pattern was central to autism. The panellist’s argument applied that account of attention to the question of how a business gets built.
